In a stunning electoral upset, R Seenivasa Sethupathy of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) narrowly defeated K R Periyakaruppan of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in the Tirupattur Assembly constituency by a mere one vote. Sethupathy garnered 83,375 votes, while Periyakaruppan received 83,374 votes, showcasing the critical importance of every single vote in a democratic process. The election, part of the Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2026, witnessed a remarkable voter turnout of over 85%, reflecting strong public engagement. The counting process, which began on May 4, was marked by fluctuations and delays attributed to technical issues with electronic voting machines and the verification of postal ballots. Despite receiving more postal votes, Periyakaruppan could not retain his position, leading to the end of his two-decade reign in the constituency.
