Ranya Rao, a Kannada actress, is likely to be released soon as her one-year preventive detention under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (COFEPOSA) concludes today. Sources indicate that her legal team has completed the necessary surety formalities for her regular bail, which was granted several months ago. Rao has been implicated in a significant gold smuggling case involving over ₹102 crore (approximately $12.3 million USD) worth of gold smuggled into India. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) alleges that a sophisticated syndicate smuggled more than 127 kilograms of gold into the country, which was then circulated through an organized network of handlers and jewellers. Rao and another accused, Jain, were detained in April last year under COFEPOSA provisions, and their detention was upheld by higher courts, including the Supreme Court, due to the serious nature of the allegations. While her release is imminent, legal proceedings against those linked to the smuggling operation are expected to continue.
