In a historic election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won an absolute majority in Assam, securing 102 seats in the 126-member state assembly. Under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma, the party has strengthened its position, surpassing its previous performances in 2016 and 2021, where it secured 60 seats each time. The BJP's campaign focused on development, particularly in infrastructure, and welfare schemes targeting women, which resonated with voters. Sarma's personal appeal, characterized by a mix of aggression and a benevolent image, played a significant role in this success. The Congress party, once a dominant force in the state, has suffered a dramatic decline, winning only 19 seats. This election has also highlighted a polarization in voter demographics, with the BJP and its allies winning nearly all seats, while the Congress and its allies struggled to maintain their presence. Sarma emphasized that the victory reflects a mandate for development and the protection of indigenous people across Assam.
