Dr. Omar Afandi, a pediatrician based in Windsor, Ontario, has been suspended from practicing medicine for eight months following a ruling by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). The Discipline Tribunal found that Afandi engaged in professional misconduct by accessing and misusing the contact information of 146 newborn patients. Between April 18 and May 7, 2024, he exploited his position of trust for personal financial gain, transferring patient contact details to his personal cellphone and soliciting clinical work not covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). The CPSO characterized his actions as disgraceful and unprofessional, noting that they were premeditated. In addition to his suspension, Afandi is required to reimburse the CPSO $6,000 for handling the complaints against him. He has already paid an $8,000 fine to the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario for his misconduct.
