The Road Construction Department (RCD) of Bihar has ordered an urgent safety audit of all major bridges across the state following the recent collapse of a section of the Vikramshila Setu in Bhagalpur. This audit, which must be completed within 72 hours, aims to address concerns over the structural safety of aging bridges as the monsoon season approaches. RCD Secretary Pankaj Kumar emphasized the importance of assessing the condition of existing infrastructure and taking immediate remedial measures. The audit will cover bridges ranging from 60 to over 250 meters in length, with a total of 3,003 bridges under 60 meters, 479 bridges between 60 and 250 meters, and 97 bridges exceeding 250 meters in the state. Teams will evaluate critical components such as bearings, girders, and drainage systems, with reports to be uploaded on the department's portal. Strict accountability measures will be enforced, ensuring that negligence will lead to consequences for responsible officials. The secretary also instructed immediate repairs on any dilapidated bridges identified during the audits, highlighting the need for preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season.
