On Saturday, Bihar's National Lok Adalat successfully settled over 20,000 pending traffic e-challans under the state's One-Time Traffic Challan Settlement Scheme-2026, generating an estimated revenue of around ₹5 crore (approximately $600,000 USD). Nearly 10,000 of these were settled in Patna, reflecting a strong public response to this first-time initiative aimed at resolving traffic violation cases. The event, originally scheduled from 10 AM to 5 PM, was extended to 9 PM due to high turnout.
Despite the enthusiasm, the drive faced significant operational challenges, particularly with the online payment system, which was largely non-functional, forcing many to pay in cash. Transport department officials attributed these issues to poor connectivity. Additionally, the integration of real-time settlement with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) was not operational, complicating the process further.
While many motorists benefited from concessions of up to 50% on pending challans, complaints arose regarding the settlement of certain violations and the exclusion of heavy vehicle challans. The initiative aims to raise awareness about traffic rules and improve compliance, with plans for future public-oriented initiatives to enhance technology-driven traffic management.
