West Bengal has secured nearly ₹3,000 crore from the Indian central government for a significant upgrade to its healthcare system. Of this amount, ₹500 crore has already been transferred, with plans to roll out the Ayushman Bharat cards starting in July. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that these funds will be directed towards enhancing healthcare infrastructure, which includes improvements in hospitals, medical equipment, and public health services. The Ayushman Bharat scheme will provide eligible families in West Bengal with access to cashless treatment under the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. This rollout comes after a history of disputes between the West Bengal government, previously led by Mamata Banerjee, and the central government regarding the scheme's implementation, as the state had its own Swasthya Sathi program. Discussions between the two parties have reportedly continued to address the integration of benefits and funding. Adhikari also noted that the healthcare funds were sanctioned following persistent demands from the BJP and intervention from the Centre to enhance medical facilities in the state.
