On Sunday, Udhayanidhi Stalin was elected as the leader of the opposition for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party in Tamil Nadu, following the recent assembly elections. This decision was made during a meeting of DMK MLAs held on Thursday, where it was also announced that former minister K. N. Nehru would serve as the deputy legislative party leader and E. V. Velu would be the party whip. Udhayanidhi takes over this role from his father, M. K. Stalin, who was previously the legislative party leader but lost his seat in the recent elections. The announcement comes just before the first session of the 17th assembly, which includes a swearing-in ceremony for MLAs and a confidence motion where the ruling party must prove its majority.
