NASA's ambitious goal of landing on the Moon as many as 21 times over the next two and a half years requires a comprehensive overhaul of its lunar lander procurement strategy and improved supply chain management. Recent challenges have hindered three of the last four US lunar landing attempts, highlighting the need for better oversight of the industrial base. The agency's focus is now on establishing a lunar base rather than a mini-space station orbiting the Moon. To achieve this, NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, which has been operational for eight years, aims to facilitate frequent and low-cost access to the lunar surface. Since 2019, NASA has contracted with US companies for 13 missions, of which only one has successfully completed a landing. Although four more commercial landers are currently under construction, delays are common in the space industry, with some launches potentially being pushed to 2027.
