India has taken a significant step in its ambition to become a global sports hub by submitting an expression of interest (EOI) to host the 2038 Asian Games. This development was confirmed by Raghuram Iyer, CEO of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), following discussions at the Olympic Council of Asia's (OCA) executive board meeting held on April 21 in Sanya, China. The OCA is currently reviewing India's EOI, which is part of a broader strategy as India prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad. The city is also a candidate for the 2036 Olympics. The OCA has previously awarded the 2030 Asian Games to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and the 2034 edition to Doha, Qatar. The decision on the host city for the 2038 Asian Games is anticipated in 2028. Historically, India last hosted the Asian Games in 1982 and was the venue for the inaugural event in 1951. The Asian Games, involving over 11,000 athletes from 45 nations, is the largest multi-sport event globally, even larger than the Olympics in terms of athlete participation.
