Following the tragic deaths of two pilots from Air India and Akasa Air due to heart attacks, ALPA India, the pilots' association, has called on the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to disallow any relaxations in fatigue management regulations. The association emphasized the necessity for a time-bound roadmap for the full implementation of Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) and a transparent fatigue reporting system. Both pilots were off duty at the time of their deaths, raising concerns about the impact of fatigue on flight safety. ALPA India highlighted that the revised FDTL norms, which are designed to increase rest hours for pilots, have not been fully implemented due to operational challenges faced by airlines. In a letter to DGCA chief Vir Vikram Yadav, ALPA India President Captain Sam Thomas stressed that any reconsideration of the approved FDTL framework would be unjustifiable and warned against prioritizing commercial interests over safety imperatives. The association reported alarming trends in the acceptance of fatigue reports by operators, which undermine safety management systems. The ongoing issue of pilot fatalities and health concerns, particularly related to consecutive night duties, calls for immediate action to ensure pilots are genuinely well-rested and fit for duty.
