On Thursday evening, a Bailey bridge over the Tuivai river in Churachandpur district, Manipur, collapsed while two trucks loaded with cement were crossing. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. The bridge, situated between Sinzawl and Khuanggin villages, serves as a critical supply route for the district, facilitating the transport of essential goods from Silchar in Assam through Mizoram. Following the collapse, traffic movement along this route has been temporarily suspended, prompting the Churachandpur deputy commissioner’s office to divert all vehicular traffic via the Sinzawl–Dialkhai–Churachandpur route through National Highway 02. The National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) has been directed to restore the bridge urgently, and they have already initiated measures for the procurement and installation of a replacement bridge.
