Himachal Pradesh's fisheries department reported a significant increase in fish production from major reservoirs, rising from 549.35 metric tonnes in 2022–23 to 818.02 metric tonnes in 2025–26. This growth supports over 6,000 fishermen and enhances the livelihoods of fishing communities in the region.

The fisheries department of Himachal Pradesh has announced a notable increase in fish production from major reservoirs, with total output rising from 549.35 metric tonnes in 2022–23 to 818.02 metric tonnes in 2025–26, marking an increase of 268.67 metric tonnes over three years. Currently, more than 6,000 fishermen are involved in fishing activities across five major reservoirs, which cover approximately 43,785 hectares. The Pong Dam Reservoir in Kangra district stands out as the leading contributor, producing 314.84 metric tonnes, while other reservoirs like Kol Dam, Chamera, and Ranjit Sagar also contribute significantly. The fisheries department is committed to implementing scientific measures for the conservation and enhancement of fish species, ensuring sustainable growth in production. Vivek Chandel, the director of the fisheries department, emphasized that this increase will positively impact the livelihoods of fishing communities in districts such as Bilaspur, Una, Kangra, and Chamba, thereby strengthening their socio-economic conditions.
