On April 25, 2023, India experienced a record electricity demand of 256.11 GW, primarily driven by rising temperatures that forced many indoors. This peak demand was comfortably met, with solar energy contributing nearly 22% of the total supply. At its highest, solar generation reached 57 GW during peak hours, and at around 12:30 PM, it surged to 81 GW, accounting for about one-third of total generation. The India Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave advisory for several states, including Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, as temperatures soared between 40 and 45 degrees Celsius. The government anticipates that peak demand may rise to 271 GW this season. While coal remains the primary source of power, the contribution from non-fossil sources like solar and wind is steadily increasing. In FY26, India added 6.1 GW of wind energy capacity, bringing the total to over 56.1 GW, with plans to achieve 100 GW by 2030 and 156 GW by 2036, according to Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi.
