India is currently facing an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring to nearly 47°C in various regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that this extreme weather will likely continue for the next two days, with only a slight dip in temperatures expected after April 28 due to potential rainfall and thunderstorms in the upper Himalayan regions, including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. However, temperatures are anticipated to rise again from May 1. Notably, Akola in Maharashtra recorded the highest temperature at 46.9°C, followed by Barmer and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan at 46.4°C and 46°C, respectively. The national capital region is also experiencing elevated daytime temperatures ranging from 42-43.5°C, which is about 3-4°C above normal. Nights are providing little relief, with temperatures hovering around 25-26°C, and warm night conditions are expected to exacerbate health risks in Northwest India. Meanwhile, southern states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are grappling with high humidity levels, compounding the discomfort from the heatwave.
