Farmer unions in Punjab have deferred their planned 'rail roko' protest by three days, following assurances from the government regarding the streamlining of wheat procurement. Sarwan Singh Pandher, a leader of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), announced the decision after discussions with the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and Azad Kisan Morcha (AKM). This 72-hour grace period serves as a final ultimatum to both the Punjab state government and the central government. The protests were initially prompted by slow grain lifting after crop damage from untimely rains. In response to farmers' grievances, the Union ministry of consumer affairs, food and public distribution has approved a retroactive relaxation of procurement specifications for the current rabi season, aiming to prevent distress sales below the minimum support price (MSP) of ₹2,585 per quintal. This decision follows a formal request from the Punjab government made on April 9. Despite the federal relief, Pandher criticized Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for delays in addressing the issue while prioritizing political rallies. While procurement has reportedly begun in some markets, farmers have warned that any failure to expedite operations within the next three days will result in the immediate resumption of their statewide rail agitation.
