The Tamil Nadu Geology and Mining Department has announced plans to utilize drones equipped with advanced technology for inspecting mining sites across the state. This initiative comes in response to recent inspections revealing violations in 155 out of 431 quarries. Minister for Natural Resources, T K Prabhu, conducted surprise inspections in several districts, including Tenkasi, Kanyakumari, Virudhunagar, and Madurai, leading to the immediate suspension of quarries found operating against regulations. The department aims to enhance its monitoring capabilities to prevent illegal mining activities, including unauthorized mineral extraction by vehicles. Future drone inspections will be conducted in all lease areas, with prior notice provided to lessees to ensure compliance. This strategic move highlights the government's commitment to safeguarding natural resources and enforcing mining regulations effectively.
