As temperatures soar in Chennai, the Blue Cross of India (BCI) has launched its Water Bowl Project, engaging hundreds of volunteers to create cement bowls for the city's stray animals. These bowls, painted by volunteers, are distributed throughout Chennai and neighboring districts, providing essential hydration to stray dogs, cats, cows, crows, and pigeons. Velu TM, Manager Operations at BCI, notes that IT professionals and students comprise the majority of volunteers, with an increasing number of school children participating this year. Many volunteers, like C Udayakumar, express a deep sense of responsibility towards the city's animals, believing that the world belongs to all living beings. The initiative not only addresses the lack of water for strays, often overshadowed by food provisions, but also fosters a sense of community and compassion among participants. Udayakumar shares his emotional experience of seeing animals gather around the bowls he painted, highlighting the fulfilling nature of this work. The Water Bowl Project serves as a reminder of the collective duty to care for the vulnerable members of the urban ecosystem.
