Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, has announced a new academic framework that awards marks for discipline and social service participation, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The university's dean for undergraduate programs, Anurag Tripathi, stated that this initiative aims to enhance student conduct and foster holistic development. A compulsory 'General Proficiency' course will be introduced for all Bachelor of Technology (BTech) students, carrying 50 marks and one academic credit. Within this framework, 10 marks will be dedicated to discipline and ethical values, including punctuality, adherence to rules, and respect for teachers. Additionally, students can earn marks for communication and leadership skills, co-curricular activities, teamwork, and participation in social service. The assessment will be semester-wise, with faculty members evaluating students based on continuous observation and overall performance. This significant decision is expected to instill behavioral standards and social responsibility in students, creating more responsible and socially aware graduates.
