On May 2, 2024, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman of Bangladesh launched a riverfront development project along the Surma River in Sylhet district. This project is designed to construct flood protection infrastructure and beautify the river banks, addressing the severe flooding issues faced in the region, particularly during the monsoon season. A 2024 UNICEF report highlighted that flash floods in the Sylhet division had impacted over 2 million people, displacing more than 51,000 individuals into shelters. The Surma River is vital for drainage and local livelihoods in northeastern Bangladesh, forming part of the Barak river system.
