A 71-year-old retired Merchant Navy captain from Dadar East, Mumbai, fell victim to a sophisticated cyber fraud scheme, losing ₹3.37 crore. The fraud began in January when he was added to a WhatsApp group claiming to be associated with Axis Capital, led by MD and CEO Atul Mehra. A woman, posing as Mehra's assistant, contacted him and offered investment opportunities in the stock market. After collecting personal details, she directed him to a fraudulent trading platform that mimicked a legitimate investment site. Initially hesitant, the captain was convinced to invest after seeing purported profits. Over 61 transactions, he transferred ₹3.37 crore to various accounts controlled by the scammers. The platform later indicated profits of nearly ₹27 crore, but when he attempted to withdraw his earnings, he was told to pay ₹37 lakh in taxes, raising his suspicions. He subsequently reported the incident to the police, leading to an investigation by the Central Cyber Crime unit.
