The Maharashtra state government has granted administrative approval for the Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor, now projected to cost ₹31,793 crore due to a ₹2,524 crore escalation. This 126.06-kilometre corridor will enhance connectivity between key infrastructure including the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and Navi Mumbai International Airport, while alleviating traffic congestion in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The project, initially managed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), was transferred to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) in 2020. Construction will begin on a 96.41-km stretch from Mauje Navghar in Vasai to Mauje Balavali in Pen. The MSRDC's managing director, Anil Kumar Gaikwad, indicated that the contract includes a cost escalation clause to accommodate rising construction costs over the project's three-year timeline. The land acquisition process is ongoing, with tenders expected to be issued by the upcoming monsoon season. A review committee will oversee the project's progress.
