St. Thomas Aquinas has solidified its status as a powerhouse in Florida water polo, with both the boys' and girls' teams achieving significant success this season. The boys' team, under the guidance of coach Michael Goldenberg, captured their second state championship in four years and third overall, overcoming challenges to defeat Ransom Everglades 14-12 in the final. Key to their success was goalkeeper Marcell Varhalmi, who was named the Miami Herald's Broward Boys' Player of the Year for his impressive average of nearly 13 saves per game. Meanwhile, Kristin Plitnick, recognized as the Girls’ Coach of the Year, led the girls' team to the state final four after dominating the regional playoffs, including decisive victories against Cooper City, Miami Country Day, and Western. The girls' success was bolstered by standout player Riley Andres, who led the nation in scoring with 282 goals. Together, Goldenberg and Plitnick have demonstrated exceptional coaching prowess, contributing to the continued excellence of the Aquinas water polo program.
