The Indian government is considering new regulations for companies participating in the Electronic Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) that would require them to invest in design capabilities. Currently, many firms in the electronics sector primarily focus on assembly, but the government wants to shift this towards high-value design work. Under the proposed rules, companies will need to submit details about their design workforce and investment plans for enhancing design capabilities over the project construction period and the subsequent two years. This initiative follows a recent statement by Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, who warned that companies failing to invest in design could be removed from the scheme, which has a total budget of ₹40,000 crore (approximately $4.8 billion USD). This move aims to strengthen India's position in the global electronics market by fostering local design and innovation.
