The National Burns Centre (NBC) in Navi Mumbai has raised alarms over a significant gap in skin donations, revealing that the city needs 150 skin grafts each month but only receives 30. Dr. Sunil Keswani, the director of NBC, emphasized that a major cause of this shortfall is the lack of awareness regarding skin donation, as only 1 in 10 people understand the process. The NBC operates 35 skin banks across India, with four located in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, but there are none in the northeastern region. Approximately 70% of burn patients are young adults aged 15-35, and the lack of access to skin transplants places a heavy economic and emotional burden on survivors and their families. The NBC is actively working to increase awareness through nearly 300 programs each year and has established a helpline to assist those interested in skin donation.
