Eileen Wang, the mayor of Arcadia in Southern California, has agreed to plead guilty to charges of acting as an illegal agent for the People's Republic of China. Elected in November 2022, Wang was charged in April with one count of promoting Chinese interests in the United States without notifying the U.S. government, as required by law. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that Wang admitted to acting as a foreign agent from at least 2020 through 2022, sharing articles favorable to Beijing. Following the charges, she resigned from her position, with federal officials stating that her conduct did not involve city finances or staff. Wang faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison. Her attorneys noted that she recognizes the seriousness of her actions and has expressed remorse, emphasizing her ongoing commitment to the Arcadia community.
