On Tuesday night, Tamil Nadu recorded a peak power demand of 21,060 MW, marking the second time this summer the demand has exceeded 21,000 MW. This surge, noted at 10:30 PM, indicates a significant rise in air-conditioner usage as nighttime temperatures increase. The previous peak was 21,010 MW, recorded on April 17. Total power consumption reached 462.38 million units (MU), narrowly missing the all-time daily record by just 0.3 MU. Of this total, only 77 MU was generated by the Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Limited (TNPGCL) through its thermal, gas, and hydro plants, while 127 MU was supplied by central power plants. Additional contributions came from long- and medium-term power purchase agreements and market purchases. Despite TNPDCL officials claiming that the electricity demand was met without issues, residents in areas such as Kolathur, Anna Nagar West, Vanagaram, and Chitlapakkam reported power supply interruptions, attributed to failures in the local distribution system.
