The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has historically struggled to establish a foothold in West Bengal, a state with deep cultural roots that diverge from its north Indian ideology. Despite the BJP's symbolic connections to Bengali culture, such as the national song 'Vande Mataram' and the concept of Bharat Mata, it has remained a marginal force. The Bengali bhadralok, representing the middle and upper-caste Hindus, has fostered a unique identity that often views itself as distinct from other Hindu communities in India. This self-image has been reinforced over decades, particularly as the RSS and its affiliates failed to resonate with local sentiments. The BJP's recent gains, particularly in the 2019 elections, have been attributed to a shift of former Left supporters towards the party after the Left's decline in 2011. However, the party still faces significant challenges, especially in Kolkata, where the cultural identity of the bhadralok may resist the RSS's brand of Hindutva. The upcoming elections will be critical in determining whether the BJP can penetrate this bastion of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and reshape the political landscape of West Bengal.
