The Maharashtra government, led by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, is cracking down on private bus operators accused of arbitrarily increasing fares during peak travel periods, such as summer holidays. Reports indicate that fares for buses traveling from Mumbai to the Konkan region have surged by 80%-100%, with current prices reaching ₹2,200 compared to regular fares of ₹1,200. In Marathwada, fares have jumped from ₹800 to ₹1,500. In response to numerous complaints, Sarnaik announced the formation of a committee to investigate these fare hikes and the operation of unauthorized ticket-booking apps. The committee will include representatives from the Surajya Abhiyan initiative and will focus on creating effective mechanisms to address passenger grievances. Sarnaik also stressed the need to enhance hygiene standards in state transport buses and improve passenger assistance systems at bus depots. He assured that strict action would be taken against operators exploiting passengers financially, highlighting the government's commitment to providing quality facilities.
