According to a study published in The Lancet, high-income countries are projected to eliminate cervical cancer by 2048, thanks to effective vaccination and screening strategies. In contrast, low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are expected to experience only a 23% reduction in cervical cancer rates over the next century, widening the health disparity. The World Health Organization (WHO) has set the '90-70-90' targets for 2030, aiming for 90% HPV vaccination coverage among girls by age 15, 70% of women screened by ages 35 and 45, and 90% of women with pre-cancer and cancer treated. Meeting these targets could prevent 37 million cervical cancer cases globally. However, many LMICs may struggle to achieve these goals without increased investment in health initiatives. The study highlights the importance of global cooperation and innovative strategies, such as lower-cost vaccines and multi-age cohort vaccinations, to make cervical cancer elimination feasible worldwide.
