The Delhi government is set to declare leprosy a notifiable disease under the Delhi Epidemic Diseases Act, a decision aimed at improving surveillance and treatment compliance in the national capital. The proposal, which has been approved by the Delhi Health Department, awaits final approval. Once implemented, healthcare providers will be mandated to report leprosy cases to the District Leprosy Officer, facilitating targeted interventions and ensuring that patients receive timely diagnosis and free treatment through Multi-Drug Therapy at government facilities. Health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh emphasized that this initiative would help identify hidden cases, curb transmission, and ensure dignified treatment for all patients. Despite India achieving the elimination of leprosy as a public health problem in 2005, the country still accounts for nearly 59% of global annual new cases. A recent study revealed that 44.1% of leprosy patients are treated in private facilities and remain unreported, perpetuating community transmission. The World Health Organization has recommended that leprosy be included in the list of notifiable diseases to enhance monitoring and control efforts.
