The 36th plenary of the ISO TC 20/SC 14 on Space Systems and Operations was inaugurated on May 4 in New Delhi, organized by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) in collaboration with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). This five-day event aims to discuss critical areas essential for fostering a sustainable and commercially viable space economy, such as orbital debris management, the space environment, downstream space services, and design engineering. Dr. Pawan Goenka, chairman of IN-SPACe, highlighted the significant transition of the Indian space sector from a government-operated model to a private sector-driven economy. He noted that hosting this plenary provides an excellent opportunity for India to contribute to global standard formation, which is crucial for developing competitive and interoperable space systems. The plenary has attracted more than 200 delegates from 33 member nations, with approximately 55 delegates attending in person. Additionally, an international workshop on space systems standardization is scheduled for May 7, featuring four panel discussions that will cover the complete lifecycle of space systems.
