The Lucknow Meteorological Centre is poised to be upgraded to a Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), which will significantly enhance weather forecasting and warnings in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. This upgrade will make Lucknow the eighth RMC in India, joining established centres in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. The formal announcement is anticipated at a program at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan, attended by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister Jitendra Singh. The upgrade is expected to strengthen the monitoring and forecasting of severe weather events, including heatwaves, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall. With the new designation, the centre's jurisdiction will expand to include both states, allowing for quicker processing and dissemination of weather data. This will improve the accuracy of short-term forecasts and facilitate the issuance of location-specific warnings, benefiting disaster management agencies, farmers, and the aviation sector. The upgraded facility will also provide enhanced operational autonomy and better technical infrastructure, ensuring faster and more reliable weather information for the public and various sectors.
