In response to a troubling series of four student suicides at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Kurukshetra, the Indian Ministry of Education has ordered significant reforms to enhance campus governance and student welfare. This decision follows a high-level review led by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The recent tragedies, including the suicide of a 20-year-old second-year student on April 16, sparked protests from students who accused the administration of negligence and demanded a thorough investigation. In light of the unrest, academic activities were suspended, and students were asked to vacate hostels, with some allowed to return from May 9. As part of the reforms, the ministry has appointed Brahmjit Singh as the officiating director after accepting the resignation of B V Ramana Reddy, who had his administrative and financial powers withdrawn. The reforms will focus on upgrading hostel facilities, implementing structured faculty training on mentoring, and establishing standard operating procedures to enhance student engagement. Additionally, the Haryana Human Rights Commission is taking cognizance of the situation and has requested reports from both the institute and local authorities.
