The Thai Cyber Crime Suppression Division (ACSC), led by Pol Lt Gen Jirabhop Bhuridej, reported a total of 5,583 online fraud cases from May 17 to 23, resulting in financial losses of 214.3 million baht (approximately $6.1 million USD). Although the number of cases decreased slightly by 58 from the previous week, the financial damages rose by 12.5 million baht. Fraud related to goods and services was the most prevalent, comprising nearly 85% of complaints, while investment and impersonation scams, despite being less frequent, accounted for 63-65% of total losses. Notably, investment scams alone caused losses of 83.3 million baht. The ACSC also observed a rise in proactive cyber-attacks, with incidents increasing from 5 to 23 and losses surging from 2.2 million baht to 8.4 million baht. A new scheme, termed CEO fraud or business email compromise (BEC), has emerged, where criminals forge emails to impersonate senior executives, urging finance staff to transfer funds or alter payment details. These emails often closely mimic legitimate addresses, enhancing their credibility.
