The Indian National Congress has decided to support the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Vijay, in forming the government in Tamil Nadu following the 2026 Assembly elections. TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, just 10 seats short of a majority in the 234-member Assembly. The Congress party, which holds five seats, aims to secure two Cabinet positions and some chairmanships in government boards as part of this collaboration. This alliance is significant as it challenges the long-standing political dominance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in the state. The Congress's Tamil Nadu unit, led by President K Selvaperunthagai, unanimously agreed to support TVK during a late-night virtual meeting. Additionally, TVK is exploring support from smaller parties, including the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and Communist parties, to solidify its position. In a statement, Vijay expressed gratitude to the voters, emphasizing that the election results signify a rejection of money-driven politics. As political negotiations gain momentum, Vijay has sought a meeting with Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar to discuss the government formation process.
