Kerala Kalamandalam, the premier institution for Kerala's traditional art forms located in Thiruvananthapuram, is introducing structured textbooks for the first time, marking a significant shift from the traditional gurukulam education method. This change aims to modernize the arts curriculum as the institution prepares for the new academic year. The initiative, which began in April, resulted in the creation of 60 textbooks across 14 subjects, developed with the support of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. B Ananthakrishnan, stated that the new curriculum will apply to students from Classes 8 to 10, dedicating 70% of the curriculum to arts education and 30% to academic studies. The textbooks will cover various dance forms, including Mohiniyattam and different styles of Kathakali, reflecting the institution's commitment to evolving with the times. A curriculum for higher education is also planned for future implementation.
