In an effort to combat cyber fraud targeting senior citizens, a dual OTP-authentication facility has been launched in Gurugram, Nuh, Faridabad, and Palwal, Haryana. This system, introduced by multiple private banks including HDFC Bank, allows seniors to link a second mobile number of a trusted family member to their bank account. When a transaction is initiated, two One-Time Passwords (OTPs) are generated and sent to both numbers, requiring authentication from both parties for the transaction to proceed. The initiative was first piloted in Gurugram and Panchkula and is now being expanded to additional districts. HDFC Bank's nodal officer, Vipin Gupta, stated that the project started on April 14 and is currently available at 50 branches in the pilot areas. The dual OTP system is designed to provide a 'protective pause,' allowing family members to intervene if fraud is suspected. Additionally, the Haryana Police have launched a security app called Abhedya to protect businessmen from extortion threats by gangsters operating internationally. Awareness campaigns are underway to educate users about both the dual OTP system and the Abhedya app.
