As the tenure of gram panchayats in Uttar Pradesh concludes, the state government has issued an order allowing the outgoing 57,694 gram pradhans to continue their roles as administrators. This decision aims to prevent any administrative gaps at the village level until new panchayat bodies are elected in 2026. The current five-year term, established after the 2021 elections, formally ends on May 26, 2023. Starting May 27, the gram pradhans will oversee daily operations of the gram panchayats but will face restrictions on decision-making powers. They are prohibited from making policy decisions unless urgent circumstances arise, in which case proposals must be approved by the district magistrate. This measure is intended to maintain continuity in governance and essential services during the transition period between the outgoing and incoming panchayat bodies. The order has been communicated to all relevant officials for compliance across the state.
