Australia has introduced a News Bargaining Incentive, compelling major tech companies like TikTok, Google, and Meta to negotiate payment agreements with local news publishers or face a 2.25% tax on their local revenue. This initiative aims to address the growing reliance on social media for news consumption, raising concerns about fair compensation for news organizations. In India, the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) and the Indian Newspaper Society have echoed these concerns, advocating for similar measures. Cyber law expert Pavan Duggal mentioned that while India has the authority to impose such taxes, no formal proposal has emerged yet. He emphasized that tech companies benefiting from the Indian market must adhere to local laws, including taxation. Tarun Pathak, Research Director at Counterpoint Research, noted that while discussions on revenue sharing are ongoing, implementing a model akin to Australia's may be complicated due to the vast disparities in ad revenue distribution among platforms.
