The US government has opened the Consolidated Administration and Processing of Entries (CAPE) portal for tariff refund requests, following a Supreme Court decision declaring that President Trump's tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) were illegal. This portal allows over 330,000 importers who collectively paid $166 billion in IEEPA duties to submit their refund requests. However, consumers who faced higher prices due to these tariffs will not necessarily receive refunds. The process is expected to issue refunds within 60 to 90 days after the acceptance of a CAPE declaration. Despite this progress, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett indicated that the Trump administration is considering alternative measures that could potentially reduce the total refund amount, which is currently under scrutiny by US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. As the new refund process is rolled out, delays in processing are expected.
