Rainmatter, a venture fund supported by Zerodha, has made a significant investment of ₹20 crore (approximately $2.4 million USD) in Prime Investor, a wealth management startup based in Chennai, India. This marks the first institutional funding for the firm, which was founded in 2019 by Srikanth Meenakshi, a co-founder of FundsIndia, along with former FundsIndia executives Vidya Bala and Bhavana Acharya. Prime Investor differentiates itself by offering diverse investment strategies that include mutual funds, stocks, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and bonds, rather than a single-product portfolio management service (PMS). With this new funding, the startup plans to transition from a wealth advisory practice to a full-stack PMS, targeting clients with a minimum asset base of ₹50 lakh (around $60,000 USD). Currently, Prime Investor serves approximately 4,600 to 5,000 subscribers with a small team of eight. The investment will allow the firm to expand its team to 30 and enhance its digital customer acquisition strategy, focusing on its existing user base of 60,000 registered users, of which 12,000 have actively reviewed their portfolios.
