In Maharashtra, the lack of recruitment for physical education teachers in government-aided urban and rural schools has led to significant unrest among eligible candidates. Currently, 4,860 posts for sports teachers are vacant, with the last recruitment conducted in 2014. Candidates are frustrated by the slow progress following a government resolution issued in January 2025 to fill these positions. Many schools are functioning without full-time physical education teachers, relying instead on contractual staff paid as little as ₹150 (approximately $1.80 USD) per day, which raises concerns about the quality of physical education. The Maharashtra Yuva Sharirik Shikshan Mahasangh (MYSSM) plans an indefinite protest at Mumbai's Azad Maidan starting April 27, demanding immediate recruitment through the Pavitra portal and ensuring that physical education posts are not diverted to other subjects. MYSSM secretary Tayappa Shendge emphasized the importance of physical education for students' overall development and the foundation it provides for future athletes. A senior officer from the state school education department stated that recruitment is not currently underway and will only proceed once orders are received from higher authorities.
