On Thursday, the Calcutta High Court dismissed a petition from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) challenging the Chief Electoral Officer's decision to appoint only Central government employees as vote-counting supervisors for the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal. The TMC argued that these employees could be influenced by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the national level. However, Justice Krishna Rao stated that the counting process would also include micro observers and counting agents from the candidates, making it 'impossible' to support TMC's claims. The court found no illegality in the appointment of Central government employees for this role and permitted TMC to file an election petition if they can substantiate claims of vote manipulation. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, following the conclusion of polling in West Bengal.
