A recent survey conducted by Internet Matters, a U.K.-based online safety advocacy organization, highlights that children in the United Kingdom are using methods like fake facial hair to bypass age verification systems. The survey involved 1,270 children aged 9 to 16 and their parents, revealing that 46% of children find these methods easy to circumvent. The Online Safety Act, which came into effect in July 2025, mandates service providers to implement effective age verification technologies. However, 49% of children reported experiencing online harm recently, indicating that while safety features have improved—68% of children and 67% of parents noted better reporting tools—many still encounter harmful content. The survey also found that 26% of parents allow their children to bypass age checks, raising concerns about parental involvement in online safety. Experts suggest that as age verification laws evolve, parents should educate themselves and their children about online content safety and digital citizenship.
