On May 30, 2026, Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), visited V. O. Chidambaranar Port to review its green energy initiatives. During the visit, the port signed two significant memoranda of understanding (MoUs). The first, with Bureau Veritas (India), focuses on green port certification, emissions accounting, and the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for green fuels and sustainability. The second MoU with AM Green Ammonia (India) aims to develop an ammonia production plant in Thoothukudi with a capacity of 1 million tons per annum. This initiative will include infrastructure for green ammonia handling and bunkering. Sarangi reviewed various renewable energy projects at the port, including a 9 MW wind power project and a pilot green hydrogen plant. He noted that VOC Port's initiatives in solar and wind energy, as well as green hydrogen and methanol manufacturing, are setting a benchmark for green transitions globally. Susanta Kumar Purohit, Chairperson of VOC Port Authority, reiterated the port's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and moving towards Net Zero goals.
