Pravesh Wahi, a councillor from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was elected mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Monday, receiving 156 out of 165 votes. His opponent, Hazi Zaraf from the Congress party, garnered only 9 votes. The BJP, which holds a majority in the MCD, also secured the deputy mayor position and additional seats on the standing committee. The voting process, which began at 2:10 PM and concluded by 4 PM, involved an electoral college of 274 members including MCD councillors, MLAs, and MPs from Delhi. Wahi has stated that his priorities include clearing landfill sites by December and conducting regular inspections of biomining work. He also announced that no sealing actions would take place during his tenure, following a citywide survey to identify misuse of residential properties for commercial purposes. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which previously held significant power in the MCD, chose not to contest the election, with Leader of Opposition Ankush Narang expressing hope that the BJP will not disappoint the citizens of Delhi this year. The MCD was restructured in May 2022 after merging East, North, and South Delhi Municipal Corporations, with AAP previously winning the mayoral elections in the first two years.
