The Philippines and Japan have expanded their collaboration to modernize the fisheries sector through advanced Japanese technology, as announced by the Department of Agriculture (DA). This partnership is designed to enhance fisheries output in the face of climate change, increasing production costs, and rising food demand. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized the importance of building resilient food systems that integrate technology to support farmers and fisherfolk. The enhanced memorandum of cooperation was signed during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s recent state visit to Japan, following a previous accord with Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF). The collaboration will focus on innovation, including smart farming and digital transformation, and aims to improve access to Japanese expertise in areas such as precision agriculture and postharvest technologies. A Joint Committee on Agriculture and Fisheries (JCAF) will be formed to facilitate ongoing discussions and project development, with the first meeting scheduled for July 2-3 in Tokyo.
