The Himachal Pradesh High Court has intervened to stay the proposed relocation of the gynaecology outpatient department (OPD) from Kamla Nehru Hospital (KNH) to Indira Gandhi Medical College & Hospital (IGMC) in Shimla. This decision was made by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia and Justice Bipin Chandra Negi while addressing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Falma Chauhan, secretary of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA). The court has requested a detailed response from the state government regarding the rationale for this shift, which is now scheduled for further hearing on May 28.
Advocate Naresh Tomar, representing the petitioners, criticized the government's decision, stating that it failed to consider the practical implications, including the lack of adequate infrastructure at IGMC. He highlighted that Kamla Nehru Hospital, established in 1923, has sufficient space for expansion and modernization, making the proposed shift impractical. Local residents, women's organizations, and opposition parties have also expressed their discontent, viewing the move as a threat to the historic identity of the hospital.
Following the court's decision, Falma Chauhan described it as a victory for women and those protesting against the government's plans. The BJP party has also welcomed the ruling, interpreting it as a criticism of the Congress government's approach to healthcare infrastructure.
