The Kerala government has formed a four-member expert committee to evaluate the feasibility of a proposed high-speed railway corridor stretching 473.20 km from Thiruvananthapuram to Kannur. This decision follows an interim report from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) outlining the project. The committee, chaired by the Secretary of Transport, includes railway expert J Vinayan, finance expert Dr C Veeramani, and environmental expert Sridhar Radhakrishnan. They will assess various aspects of the proposal, including its technical feasibility, financial viability, environmental impact, and socio-economic benefits. The committee is expected to provide its recommendations to the government within three weeks. This initiative comes after consultations between Chief Minister V D Satheesan and E Sreedharan, emphasizing the need for a robust mass transit system in Kerala, especially after the previous administration's shelving of the controversial SilverLine project. Satheesan has indicated that the state will explore alternative models for future mobility needs through detailed studies.
